December 6, 2009: ACCC is pleased to announce that CBC/Radio-Canada has come on board as the official broadcast partner for our National Choral Competition. Although their recent funding cuts forced them to relinquish the competition’s management, they have agreed to offer as much broadcast support as their reduced staffing structure allows.

For the 2010 competition, all levels of adjudication will be based on the recordings submitted by choirs for the February 12th deadline.

Finalists will be selected and notified by mid-March. CBC Radio’s “Choral Concert” will dedicate a segment of its weekly broadcast to the finalists, offering these Canadian choirs extended radio play between March and May. Coverage will also be offered by Espace Musique. The final round of adjudication will take place just prior to the ACCC’s biennial conference, Podium, and the winners will be announced at the Podium banquet on Saturday, May 22nd. CBC/Radio-Canada will be recording the awards banquet and the results will be broadcast during Choral Concert on Sunday, May 23rd. The time of the broadcast on Espace Musique will be released as soon as it is known.

ELIGIBILITY

  • The competition is open to all Canadian amateur choirs who submit a recording for adjudication. An amateur choir is defined as being one that rehearses regularly, and whose individual members do not receive a professional fee. (This does not exclude those choristers who may receive a token honorarium for their work.) The conductor of the choir may receive a professional fee or salary.

  • All singers on the submitted recording must be permanent members of the choir.

  • Choirs entering the competition must be a member of their provincial choral federation or association. In provinces or territories where there is no choral federation, choirs should be a member of the nearest or most appropriate choral federation for their purposes.

  • No choir having placed First in the 2008 CBC Competition for Amateur Choirs may enter in the same category in the 2010 competition.

  • The jury reserves the right to disqualify any choir failing to comply with the intent of these regulations.
