Choral Canada is the National Arts Service Organization for the choral and group singing arts sector and community in Canada. The organization exists to provide programs and services that celebrate and foster the creation and performance of choral music in Canada, offer professional development and networking opportunities, advocate on behalf of the choral/group singing community in Canada, and provide a multitude of educational resources.

Positions and Priorities

Choral Canada is seeking six individuals who are representative of the richly diverse choral and group singing communities in which we live and who can help provide the organization with the broadest input. 

Choral Canada is committed to amplifying the voices of people around the board table who identify with the priority groups in our Strategic Plan. This includes people who are Indigenous, Black, People of Colour, Official Language Minorities, d/Deaf, Disabled, 2SLGBTQ+, gender-diverse, women, and intersections of these identities. 

We are seeking individuals who are interested in supporting our communities as Choral Canada continues to reflect upon, question, and build upon our past and current practices.

We are currently seeking directors who believe in the importance of choral and group singing and who have strengths and experience in one or more of these areas: 

• Accessibility, diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and implementation
• Fundraising and development
• Financial management
• Governance and policy development
• Human resources and volunteer management
• Leadership and strategic planning
• Adocacy and government relations

Selection
The Choral Canada Nominations Committee will review all expressions of interest. The committee will then present a slate of nominees to be approved and/or amended by the Choral Canada Board of Directors. Selection will be based upon the  individuals’ expressions of interest and the qualifications outlined above. All those who have expressed interest in the positions will be contacted directly regarding the outcome of the process. We hope to fill these new positions as early as possible. The proposed slate of directors will be presented to the Choral Canada membership and ratified at the Annual General Meeting on February 21, 2025.

Choral Canada is committed to listening to the needs of all Board members and strives to create a Board environment where all directors feel welcomed, included, and supported.
 

Language
The working language of the Board of Directors is English, but in order to widen the Board’s perspectives, we will prioritize the inclusion of more members from the French-speaking and Indigenous languages communities of Canada.

Term & Time Commitment

• 2 year terms, renewable 2 times to a maximum of 6 years (3 terms)
• 4-6 board meetings per year (inclusive of the AGM), each 2 hours 
• time preparing for board meetings, participating in committees and supporting staff

Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare for, attend, and participate in board meetings (all on Zoom, except one biennial in-person meeting -- subject to change).
• Serve on at least two board committees or task forces.
• Ensure you have an Individual Membership in good standing with Choral Canada.
• Play an active role in governance and management support and oversight.
• Participate in the approval of the annual budget and help monitor/support the financial performance of the organization.
• Participate in fundraising and advocacy initiatives and events, when needed.
• Leverage connections, networks, and resources for the benefit of the organization.
• Act in the best interest of Choral Canada,  the arts sector and the communities it serves.
• Be an ambassador for the organization and its work.

Remuneration
Serving on the Choral Canada Board of Directors is a volunteer position without any remuneration. You will be provided with administrative support, and a portion of the costs for travel and accommodations in relation to board members’ duties will be reimbursed. For individuals with financial need, board expenses may be reimbursed in full.

Choral Canada’s recent major accomplishments: 

1. Hybrid PODIUM 2024 National Choral Conference and Festival which included multiple new or reimagined initiatives.
2. 2024 National Youth Choir of Canada professional development training program and tour.
3. Completing Cultural Pluralism in the Arts Movement Ontario’s training in leading organizational change through the lens of Accessibility, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ADEI).

Upcoming year includes:

1. Launching the “All Together Now: Organizational Change for Leaders of Choirs and Singing Groups” training program, with a foundation in ADEI.
2. Launching the reimagined National Choral Awards through the lens of ADEI.
3. Online webinars and workshops for professional development and building connection.
4. Planning for PODIUM 2026 and the 2026 National Youth Choir of Canada.

Participation in Choral Canada Programs & Service
Being a member of the Choral Canada Board of Directors does not exclude you or any choir/singing group with which you are affiliated from participating in any of Choral Canada’s programs and services, such as the Podium Conference & Festival and the National Choral Awards. Choral Canada has policies in place to ensure a fair and transparent process that does not provide an advantage to members of the Choral Canada Board of Directors.

Our office is located in Tkaronto, Dish With One Spoon territory and covered by Treaty 13 and the Williams Treaties. We are grateful to work, live and make music on the traditional territory of many nations, including the Mississaugas of Credit, Anishnabeg, Chippewa, Haudenosaunee and Wendat.
